As any traveling professional knows, moving to a new place, even when it’s just temporary, can be a challenging transition. Here are a few tips to making any space your own, no matter how permanent or temporary the arrangement might be.
The easiest way to bring yourself into a space is to display personal mementos and photos of people and places that bring you joy. Small picture frames are easy to fit in your luggage if you’ll be in temporary housing for just a few weeks (don’t forget about digital picture frames!), but it’s certainly the first thing to do in you’ve moved into a new home for a longer amount of time. From there you can dive in a little deeper.
Take stock of your hobbies: Do you love old cameras? Do you collect heirloom quilts? The things you love most shouldn’t be hidden away in a storage box under the bed, they should be displayed beautifully so you can enjoy them daily. Bring something small that reminds you of what you love, and this way it will remind you to keep up with your passions when you’re away from home.
If you (or a friend) love to craft or paint, make some custom art specifically for your home. Or, look online for help coming up with a beautiful and creative solution, like creating a lamp out of twinkle lights in a glass punch bowl, for instance. Not only do those items make your home look beautiful, but they infuse the space with your personality and the care that it took to make them as well. Supplies are easy to find anywhere, and you can donate any larger crafts when it’s time to leave.
At the end of the day, it’s your house, your rules. If you always take your shoes and jacket off as you come in the door, go with it, and supply your entry with a basket for shoes and hooks for coats. If you are too paralyzed to decorate by the idea of making a design mistake, remember it’s your space! When in doubt, choose the option that will bring you the most joy.
