While we all may love classic summer movies like National Lampoon’s Vacation or Heavyweights, we also would probably like to avoid most of the situations presented in those films. After all, just because it’s entertaining on screen doesn’t mean that it would be fun to deal with in real life. Toga parties where a house gets ripped to shred aren’t fun if it’s your house!

To ensure you have a great vacation, be sure to follow these tips. You’ll have an amazing time without the hassle, which sounds like the recipe for a perfect getaway to us.

By putting a little bit of planning into your summer vacation, you're sure to have a much more relaxing and fun time!

Planning

Before your trip, you’ll want to make sure you’ve booked vacation lodging, rental car and maybe even paid to see some attractions before you arrive. There’s nothing worse than landing in a destination and not having anywhere to go – or worse, having it be closed! Plus, it will save you time and money when you plan ahead of time. Buying passes ahead of time (think about those lines at a popular place like Disney) will allow you to bypass the queue and save time too. Plus, you’ll ensure you won’t miss out on popular attractions that may sell out.

Budgeting

Out of all the tips on this list, this is probably the most important of the bunch. The last thing you want is to run out of money on a trip. It’s probably best to look up how much everything will cost and then give yourself some wiggle room. If you know you’ll be on a tight budget, plan for it by pre-paying for as much as you can and not spending too much money on pricy souvenirs. After all, does your Aunt Sally really need another “Wish You Were Here” shirt? Probably not.

Pack Carefully

You know how they say you should always bring an extra pair (or two) of underwear? Well, they’re right. But don’t stop at just your undergarments. Make a list and check it twice. Be sure to bring along any medication you may be taking or any you may need. You never know when you’ll want to pop a painkiller or antacid during your getaway.

Inquire about Cancellation Policies

We all know that even the most well-planned trips can end in disaster. You come down with the flu, a hurricane strikes, or your girlfriend shows up at the same resort with her new boyfriend. It happens. To really be fully prepared, be sure to look into travel insurance or check a hotel’s cancellation policy before you book. Many will refund your money if you cancel within a few days notice.

Make Sure Everything At Home Is Taken Care Of

If you have pets, either board them or ensure that you have a pet sitter who will come to check on your four-legged pals. After all, who wants to come home to a place that’s been ravaged by your furry friends? If you’ll be gone for a long time, consider stopping your mail or newspaper or at least hire someone to pick up those things for you. To avoid a Home Alone scenario, be sure to have someone who lives nearby check on your home and manage things while you’re away.

Phew. Now that you’ve checked off everything on this list, enjoy your vacation!
