Traveling brings plenty of joys. You’re headed toward a new place and about to have new experiences. Maybe you’ve always wanted to see the Space Needle or the St. Louis arch with your own eyes, and you’re finally getting the chance to cross it off your list. But like with any experience, there are definite downsides. You might get sick, and you’ll probably get lost more than once.

But perhaps the biggest travel pitfall is losing your belongings. Maybe you shelled out for some nice perfume or a gorgeous dress, or worse – an expensive piece of work equipment – and it gets stolen or lost. Don’t despair! Follow these tips to keep your belongings safe while traveling.

Keep it Close

If you have any crucial necessities like glasses, contacts or medications, consider packing those in your carry on. Other items you will definitely need to keep close: a passport and your ID (take both; you never know), laptops or other electronics or even a few changes of clothes, especially if you’re traveling on business. If your main bag gets lost, at least you’ll have your essentials with you.

Leave Your Heirlooms at Home

If you’re the proud owner of a precious family heirloom necklace or ring, leave it at home. Chances are you’ll only be gone for a few days or weeks and can live without it.

Split Your Cash

If you’ll be gone for a few weeks, you’ll want to split up your cash and credit cards. Stash some in your suitcase, laptop bag or backpack and leave some in your carry-on or purse. If you lose one of those items, you’ll at least have some cash to hold you over while you have money wired to you.

Watch Security

Be sure to keep track of your belonging as you go through security. It can get lifted in line or fall through the  conveyor belt rollers, never to be seen again. How many times have you been in an airport when they’ve asked if someone left their laptop? We bet it’s more than once. Watch your stuff.

Use that Safe Deposit Box

If you have to bring your valuables with you (if you’re getting married in a tropical destination, you’ll probably want to bring your wedding rings along), it’s best to leave them in the hotel unless you have immediate need of them.

It’s important to find safe secure housing, too – and motels may not feel quite as secure as you’d hope.
