Boldt Castle
A private castle located on its own private island in the middle of a majestic lake sounds like the stuff of fairy tales right? But this real life castle is called Boldt Castle and is located in the heart of the Thousand Islands area of New York. Built by the general manager of the famous Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, Boldt Castle is now open to the public daily, so everyone can feel like they are in their own fairy tale or Game of Thrones episode, whatever you’re into.
Eternal Flame Falls
There is nothing quite as beautiful as a cascading waterfall. That is, unless there is an eternal natural gas flame that is located directly behind it. That’s just what you’ll see at Eternal Flame Falls where natural gas is emitted at the base of the falls, leading to a view that you can’t just replicate anywhere else. Despite its beauty, Eternal Flame Falls is still mostly unknown by the general public, so it’s worth making the trip out to Chestnut Ridge Park in western New York before word gets out.
Whiteface Mountain Steps
Whiteface Mountain is known throughout the state for its skiing and snowboarding in winter. But when snow hasn’t hit the mountain yet the Whiteface Mountain Steps make for a great hike with views almost unparalleled in the state. Make the steep climb to the top (make sure to bring hiking shoes and lots of water) and you’ll be rewarded with views of mountains, lakes, and more greenery than you can believe.
Triphammer Falls
If you know anybody at Cornell or in Ithaca, now is a good time to reach out because there is no better time to see nearby Triphammer Falls. Located in the center of the already beautiful Cornell campus, Triphammer Falls is a multiple cascading waterfall in the middle of a scenic gorge with well-manicured autumnal trees surrounding it. It’s a definite must on your waterfall bucket list.
Stonecrop Gardens
Last, but not least, Stonecrop Gardens in the Hudson Highlands of Cold Springs, New York is perhaps one of the best run gardens in the entire state. After opening to the public in 1992, Stonecrop Gardens has become a destination for all garden enthusiasts because of its 12 acres of well manicured gardens and woodland. You can find water gardens, cliff rock gardens, raised alpine stone beds, grass gardens, and an English style garden here along with a conservatory, Alpine house, and Pit House. It’s a definite must see.
