A Super-Efficient, Sturdy Carry-on Bag
The first thing you should look for is an efficient and sturdy carry-on bag that comfortably fits your needs. You’ll want a bag that makes organization easy and allows you to keep important documents and items safe and within reach. You also want to make sure you have a bag that won’t let you down or put too much weight on your shoulders. You don’t want a bag that will impede your mobility because of size, weight, or discomfort.
Important Documents and Items
Don’t forget your important documents! We know this one is obvious. Important documents are important for a reason, after all. It is for that very reason that we want to remind you to always check that you have your passport, wallet, keys, phone, flight confirmation, and other essential items. When something is obvious, our brains tend to gloss over it. Don’t let your brain assume that you’ve already packed the important stuff. Put them on your pack list.
Medical Kit
Packing a small medical kit with pain relievers and other medications you may need—plus bandaids—will allow you to easily take care of your basic health needs. If for some reason you get delayed longer than expected, you’ll be relieved that you packed your prescriptions so you don’t have to miss a dose due to unforeseen circumstances. There are very few things worse than traveling with a headache. So, before you head out, make sure you’ve packed all of your prescriptions and some aspirin.
Pocket-Sized Self Care Items
Regardless of where you’re going, you’ll want to arrive feeling fresh and clean. Pack the self-care items that you’ll end up using more than you expected. Pocket-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, regulation-sized mouthwash, mints, antibacterial wipes, deodorant, stain remover, and eye drops are items that won’t take much space, but will help you save face.
Electronics
We know you need your electronics! The best way to travel with them is to have them be well-organized. Make your life easier by using a bag organizer for your gadgets. Airport security guidelines ask you to scan your large electronics separately, so make sure that doing so won’t be a hassle for you.
It is also a good idea to carry your charger and portable battery pack with you. You never know when you might be stuck in an area with no outlet. If you’re relying on any of your devices for important information, such as GPS, email, and accessing files, make sure you won’t have to go without them during any part of your trip.
Healthy Snacks and a Refillable Water Bottle
Even if you get meal vouchers, you’d do well to pack some healthy snacks you can munch on at any time. If you’re running late and can’t stop to buy something to eat, you’ll be able to turn to your protein bar, a bag of assorted nuts, or any other snack of choice. This is the best way to keep your stomach from growling during any important events or meetings.
The refillable water bottle will help you stay hydrated as you go from place to place. Just make sure that you don’t try to go through safety check with a full bottle. Wait to fill it once you pass the check.
Productivity and Just-in-Case Items
No one has ever complained about having notebook and pen readily available. Make sure you have something to write with and something to write on. There is no scenario where you’ll regret having both!
It also never hurts to carry your just-in-case items. You can’t go wrong with a spare set of clothing and backup copies of important documents, including high-resolution photocopies of your passport and ID, for example. If something should happen to the originals, you’ll be better off with these copies in hand.
What You Can’t Live Without
It is a sad truth that sometimes airlines lose luggage, so if your carry-on bag is not your only bag, try to keep the items you can’t live without and other valuables in it. This way you’ll be able to keep your eyes on them at all times.
What You Need to Get Comfortable
Make sure not to forget the things you need to travel in comfort. An Eye mask, travel pillow, earplugs, and noise canceling headphones are things you should consider taking with you.
If you’re feeling like this list is too long and your bag might get too heavy, we also have tips for traveling light.
