Spring is approaching in San Diego, and while we know that winter in Southern California isn’t much to recover from, it’s still an exciting time. Flowers will be blooming and more folks will be spending time outdoors. If you’re going to be in town this spring, you need to take advantage of this. To help you out, here are a few spring activities in San Diego to get you out and enjoying the beautiful climate.

Cross the Seven Bridges

Think of this as an urban hike. It’s a roughly 5.5-mile walk in Balboa Park and its surrounding neighborhoods that will take you across seven different bridges, ranging from a pedestrian walkway to a suspension footbridge over a canyon in Bankers Hill that moves beneath your feet as you walk.

This walk is a neat way to get out, get some exercise, and explore. You’ll visit three neighborhoods and cross El Prado, the most eventful stretch of Balboa Park. The San Diego Reader printed a handy map of the walk a while back. (Bonus: it’s not displayed on the map, but there is an eighth bridge along the course: over Highway 163 on University Avenue.)

Walk the Bridle Trail

Balboa Park may be packed with visitors on any given day, but it still has its quiet parts where you can manage to find solitude. We recommend the Bridle Trail, which runs roughly parallel to Highway 163.

Starting in the northern reaches of the park, the Bridle Trail features lush greenery and plants that are particularly beautiful in the springtime, when they bloom. The trail takes you right under the archway of El Prado — one of San Diego’s most picturesque features.

Of course, the Bridle Trail is walkable any time of year. Only in spring, though, can you catch the beauty of plants in full bloom.

Visit the Flower Fields in Carlsbad

Speaking of things in bloom, spring means it’s time for a visit to one of the most-popular attractions in North County — the Flower Fields in Carlsbad. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful arrangement of colorful plants anywhere.

From March 1 thru May 15, visitors can walk the Flower Fields and take in the breathtaking view: fields of color in every direction, meticulously arranged, spanning 50 acres. Adding to the beauty is the location itself — on a hillside that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. You don’t have to be a plant lover to appreciate the beauty you’ll find here.
