The American economic recession has been in full effect for a few years now, and while many industries are slowly making their way back to normal, allocating funding for job relocation of newly hired employee’s remains a tough sell for many exec’s.
As reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the city of Atlanta was once a thriving market for relocation. The article goes on to quote Dana Eskridge, relocation director for Better Homes and Garden Metro Brokers, ““Companies still move people, but only when they have to, and they’re offering fewer relocation benefits.” Paying for moving household goods and a temporary housing stipend are the most common, she said”.
One senior vice president, Andrew Chastian, who shed light on his companies views regarding bringing on new talent sums up how important a consideration location is to them, “We ask job seekers who would need to relocate to tell us about their housing situation….We’ve seen both companies and candidates walk away from opportunities due to housing issues.”
Atlanta isn’t the only city affected, as nationwide reports by the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that 2011 saw the lowest number of moves in almost 50 years. With the main costs associated with moving a new employee across city or state lines generally related to setting them up comfortably, its no wonder industry professionals have turned to corporate housing vendors like PC Housing whose proven business model is poised to take over the market in the next few years. Chastain commented on the trend later in the piece, “Other companies are giving a temporary housing allowance of three to six months, which helps with the cash flow of new hires until their homes sell”.
Temporary, furnished apartments are making a huge impact on the hotel industry as many corporate travelers have opted towards the comfort and ease of use they provide. Corporations looking for an affordable way to put new hires up without the massive costs of one huge move could easily place them in a fully furnished home for anywhere from 30 days to 6 months. Not only does this allow more time for adjusting to a new job in a new city, but eases the stress of setting up an entire new life for potential candidates.
