Coordinating with travel booking site Kayak, Money compiled a list of destinations that dropped overall in price for 2016 — some as much as 26 percent. All are cities that offer a wealth of activities for visitors. So let’s take a look at 4 cheap places to travel at the moment, and explore what you can do while you’re there.
Hong Kong
Money’s report says that the overall cost of visiting Hong Kong was down 26 percent in 2016, thanks largely to the rising strength of the American dollar. As a World City, Hong Kong has more to offer than any visitor could ever see in one trip.
- The Trick Eye Museum is a museum like no other — an art museum of pieces that, while standard on the surface, become three-dimensional thanks to the tricks of optics. If you loved optical illusions as a kid, you’ll love the Trick Eye Museum.
- The Peak Tower, located atop Victoria Peak, offers sweeping views of the city. There’s a fee to go to the top, but it’s worth it.
- Walk the Kowloon Waterfront for a stroll through a nice part of town. Check out the amazing view — you can even pay a photographer to take your photograph with the bright city lights as the backdrop.
Dallas
Traveling to Dallas is cheaper by 24 percent this year, according to Money. Here’s how you should take advantage of that:
- Eat barbeque. You’re in Texas. There are lots of options, but it should be easy to find a location of Spring Creek Barbeque nearby. They’re a chain exclusive to North Texas.
- Visit the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. They’re beautiful any time of year, but it’s especially nice if you’re visiting in winter from a cold climate.
- Go see a rodeo. Going to the rodeo is something everyone should do at least once in their life. If you haven’t, here’s your shot. The Mesquite Arena hosts a rodeo often, along with other cool things.
- If you’re in Dallas on a Sunday before the year is up, consider checking out a Cowboys game. After all, they are “America’s Team.” Or, catch a Stars game all winter long. Even though it may be located in a warmer climate, hockey is a big thing in Dallas.
Cleveland
With a trip to Cleveland down an average of 22 percent, it may be time for you to visit this city on Lake Erie.
- Cleveland’s most popular tourist attraction is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and it’s well-deserving of its popularity. Trace the history of rock music, enjoy interactive exhibits and check out some ultra-rare memorabilia at this waterfront museum.
- You might not know it, but Cleveland has a reputation for being a great place for outdoor activities. There are 23,000 acres of parkland in Cuyahoga County, so hit the nearest park for a hike.
- Walk the Ohio City neighborhood. This hip place is the location of many cool shops, craft breweries and a farmer’s market. Check out Ohio’s most famous brewery, Great Lakes Brewing, for a British pub lunch and some drinks, then go for a walk and explore.
Chicago
Save an average of 21 percent heading to the Windy City this year. As the third-largest city in the country, there’s always tons to do.
- A trip to Chicago isn’t complete without a visit to Navy Pier, which juts out into Lake Michigan and feels like a carnival. It’s full of games, rides, snacks and art vendors.
- Test whether you’re afraid of heights at the Skydeck atop the Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, the country’s second-tallest building. Visitors walk out 1,353 feet over the city in a glass box. It’s simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying.
- Take a tour of the Chicago River. In nice weather, one of the best ways to see the city is to take a tour on a boat along the Chicago River, which runs right through downtown. Tour guides have a wealth of information about the city’s history, and it’s both informative and fun.
