Whether you are traveling across the country, or across the world, to reach your corporate housing San Diego destination, jet lag can be quite draining on the body. Up to a week before you travel, you can start to prepare your body for the time zone shift. If you are flying eastwards, try going to bed and waking up earlier than you normally would. And if you are travelling westward, go to bed and wake up a little bit later; this will help prepare your internal body clock for the shift. It is also very important to get all your affairs in order before you travel- business and personal. Don’t be overly stressed or excited, or hungover; get a good night’s rest the night before you’re to travel.

The most important way to combat jet lag while flying is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water rather than coffee, tea or juice and avoid alcohol altogether while flying. The dry and stale air in an airplane causes dehydration, but drinking plenty of water can help with that. Exercise is also incredibly important before, during, and after flying. Try to get a moderate amount of exercise in the days leading up to your flight and while on the plane, make sure to get up frequently to stand, walk the aisles, and stretch to keep your blood flow circulating. Continue the exercise once you’ve reached your destination, preferably in fresh air and sunlight, to help your brain adjust to the new time zone.

Another helpful tip is to set your watch to the timezone of your destination as soon as you are on the plane. This will help you to start thinking in the new time zone. Do bring sleep aids like inflatable pillows, neck rests, blindfolds, and earplugs on the plane, but do not take sleeping pills. Putting your body in a comatose state while flying will only increase the jet lag once you’ve arrived.

Following these simple tips will help your transition between time zones to go as smoothly as possible!
