Whether you are a freelancer or someone who occasionally has to work while traveling, don’t fret it’s easier than you might think. In this Digital Age, plugging in, transmitting and working from just about anywhere and everywhere is a lot easier than years past.

So if you have to travel for business and work at the same time be it by boat, air, rail or car, real work can definitely be accomplished. And just think after a long flight or car drive; know that at the end of the day, it’s nice to know there is a comfy place waiting for you to rest your heels, as well as your mind. Here are some tips on how to get work done while traveling:

Internet Connection

When you’re traveling, you can’t always rely on the corner Starbucks so do your research before you travel about finding Wi-Fi in your destination. Also, have a back-up plan, like purchasing an Internet SIM card or securing a spot in a co-working space.

Pen and Paper

There might be some point in the day while traveling when you can’t connect to Wi-Fi, or when you forgot to grab a converter for your laptop charger. Or, you might be in a location you don’t feel comfortable pulling out your laptop, tablet or the like. Instead have an old standby of paper and pen within reach to jot down your ideas, and you might just find yourself grateful when inspiration strikes at a random time.

Best Hours to Work

This may sound silly, but if you can settle into a routine that maximizes your productivity, do your best to stick with it. For example, are you more productive when you work in short, two hour bursts with a half-hour break in-between or break every few hours.

Outlet Adapters

If you’re headed out of the good old US of A, think about purchasing international outlet adapters. You can pick them up at the airport, but you’ll pay less if you order online.

Make Arrangements Before Departing

If you’re working with other people, or expect to be doing interviews while you’re traveling, you should take a few minutes to set up your messaging systems before you go. If you’re going to be communicating via video, set up and test Google Hangout and Skype before you leave.

Video Interviews or Meetings

You don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute if have to Skype with an important boss or do a video interview with a client. For example, it might be a good idea to throw in a nice shirt and jacket for a video interview. And, make sure you know how to do a video chat before you go.

Time Differences

Keep track of time zones so you don’t end up calling an important contact at 2 a.m. without realizing it. Most Smartphone’s allow you to set a clock for another time zone, or you can download an app to keep track.

An Equipped Stay

Ask beforehand if the place you are staying at overnight or temporarily for a few months in has a Wi-Fi connection, outlets to recharge, business center, meeting and conference rooms and anything else you might need to make your stay easier while working.

Before you know it, you’ll have your work done, and will be able to relax and enjoy your surroundings wherever your travels might take you.
