Higher-level universities and colleges have long been the hallmark of the American educational system and none more so than in the Boston area. You don’t have to see Good Will Hunting to know that Boston is a breeding ground for prestigious universities. The northeastern gem that is home to the Red Sox has one of the highest concentrations of colleges and universities in America. It also makes sense that a city steeped in rich colonial history would have some of the best higher learning institutions in the land.
At the top of the list of celebrated universities in the Boston area is Harvard. The perennial all-everything educational institution consistently tops just about everyone’s lists of the finest universities in America. It also doesn’t hurt to have a list of alumni that reads like a who’s who in American politics and Hollywood. John Adams, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, John F. Kennedy, Al Gore, Tommy Lee Jones, Matt Damon, Natalie Portman, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg all attended Harvard.
Other extremely distinguished schools in the Boston area include Boston College in Chestnut Hill. The private Jesuit and research-based university is known for its student media, athletics and art history. For a smaller but equally prestigious university visit Brandeis University in Waltham. The school specializes in liberal arts programs like Women’s and Gender Studies, Public Policy and Sustainable International Development.
