Finding the Best San Diego Sunsets

Sunset Cliffs

Let’s start with the most obvious choice. The place so perfect for watching the sunset that it was named after it. Sunset Cliffs, just a short drive from the Airport and Ocean Beach, is perhaps the most well known place in San Diego to go for a romantic sunset.

Here, a series of cliffs hang over the rolling ocean (filled with surfers on a good wave day) with nothing in between you and the horizon except miles and miles of Pacific Ocean. Sunsets here are truly spectacular with nothing but sound of the surf crashing against the cliffs to bother you.

Hotel Del Coronado

The Hotel Del Coronado is a San Diego Landmark on it’s own, so what could be more typically San Diegan than watching the sunset from the beach at this iconic hotel. The hotel has been named as one of the finest in the world and has hosted pretty much every famous person you could think of from Thomas Edison to Marilyn Monroe to Barack Obama.

Plus, the beach the hotel is situated on was voted as one of the very best beaches in the entire country. If you’re lucky enough to come around Christmas, they even build an ice skating rink beachside so you can watch the sunset from your skates. So if you’re into history, grand victorian architecture, and stunning sunsets, the Hotel Del Coronado is the place to be.

Bertrand at Mister A’s

If you like your sunsets to come with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres, Bertrand at Mister A’s simply cannot be beat. Situated on top of one of the highest buildings in Banker’s Hill, Mister A’s has a panoramic view of the entire city facing out towards the Pacific. The view here during the day is marvelous, and the view at sunset is simply remarkable.

The view isn’t the only reason to come however. Mister A’s is one of the best restaurants in the city with its take on modern American cuisine. They also have an outdoor patio and bar area where you can take in the sunset with a cocktail and appetizers without having to make a reservation. Local’s tip: go between 2:30 and 6pm to take advantage of their cocktail hour specials, especially in the winter when you can catch the sunset too.

Top of Cowles Mountain

If you’re the more adventurous and active type, you probably want to check out the sunset from the top of Cowles Mountain. Located a bit further inland, this mountain is one of the most popular hikes in the city because it can be done fairly quickly, and once you get to the top there are panoramic views of the entire city and county (even of Mexico on a clear day!). All you need to do is hike up to the top around sunset, sit back, and enjoy. Just make sure to bring a flashlight or two since it’ll be getting dark by the time you are heading back down the mountain.

From Sunset Cliffs to the top of Cowles Mountain, there are so many amazing places see those San Diego sunsets.
