tips for traveling comfortably for business

Sometimes (who are we kidding… most times) traveling is a big hassle. There is a lot of hurry up and wait happening whether you are traveling by plane, train, or automobile. You rush to get to the airport only to stand in line at the check in, and then you quickly head over to security to wait in yet another long line. Surely enough, when it’s your turn to go through the x-ray machine, you are back to rushing again. Hurry up and take those shoes off, take out your laptop, and get rid of that bulky sweatshirt. And then there’s the general discomfort of too-small seats, the annoying passenger next to you or behind you, the temperature changes and the abundance of restrictions on movement.

We know that being in transit is stressful, but fortunately there are ways to ease discomfort while traveling. These tips for traveling comfortably will have you enjoying your flight, and maybe even looking forward to the next out-of-town conference you have to attend. Plus, the more you travel for business (or pleasure!) the more you’ll be able to anticipate what you’ll need in order to make your travels more comfortable.

  • Take comfortable shoes. Regardless of your mode of transportation, you are guaranteed to be walking considerable amounts. Wear shoes that may be easily removed to move along security checkpoints more quickly or just in case you want to kick them off during that long train ride. But please, keep the tootsies covered; not everyone is interested in seeing your feet!
  • Pack an extra pair of shoes and an extra outfit in your carryon. You never know what may happen while en route. If you are on an airplane, luggage may get lost. If traveling by bus or train, your suitcases are stowed out of reach and you may need an unexpected quick change. Tomato juice on a blazer isn’t exactly professional…
  • Pack your personal essentials in your carryon. This includes the things that you just can’t live without, whether that means some hand sanitizer and a toothbrush or your favorite electronic device and a snack.
  • Long gone are the days of airlines giving out pillows and blankets. Airplanes tend to get chilly and travelers tend to get sleepy, so make sure to take yours along for the ride. A scarf can double as both pillow and blanket for men and women.
  • Don’t forget your “I need privacy” items. You know, sunglasses for sleeping, earpieces for silence, etc.
  • Make sure the clothing you are wearing is comfortable. A loose fitting maxi dress or pair of linen pants will do the trick. A nice sweatshirt does add for extra comfort and coziness. Your favorite workout clothes are options as well, as long as you aren’t running to a meeting immediately after landing; just make sure they look presentable and are clean.
  • If you have a food allergy or special diet, don’t forget those important snacks! It may be challenging to find what you need while traveling.

Traveling by car can add to your comfort level, especially if it’s your own and you aren’t traveling alone. You have the option of taking along more of your belongings. Pack a cooler with your favorite foods and plenty of water and take several pillows and blankets, rather than just one. If you have a traveling companion, take turns stretching out and relaxing during the trip. Car traveling allows you the opportunity to travel at your own leisure, stopping as often as needed. The downfall, of course, is the extended time it will take to arrive at your destination.

If you have chosen public transportation, be sure to take every opportunity to get up and stretch your legs. Things can get kind of cramped on planes and trains. Please share with us any tips you have for traveling comfortably!
