When you think of Texas, what comes to mind? Desert? Tumbleweeds? Cowboys? While you’re partly right, the natural beauty of Texas extends far beyond these stereotypes. Travelling to the real Texas means seeing white sand beaches, breathtaking waterfalls, rushing rivers, and scenic mountain views – all without leaving the state! Here are four different unexpected Texas locations perfect for the true nature connoisseur:

Galveston’s White Sand Beaches

Since the late 1800’s, Galveston has been known as “the playground of the South” because of its fabulous attractions, year-round warm weather, and miles of beaches. Even though Galveston Island is only 27 miles long and less than 3 miles wide, it is home to 8 full beach parks, including the largest beach in the entirety of Texas.

Dripping Springs’ Majestic Waterfall and Natural Pool

For over 8,000 years people have been flocking to Hamilton Pool Reserve in Dripping Springs to enjoy its natural swimming pool, 50 foot waterfalls, and it’s unique ecosystem. Declared a preserve in 1990, the Hamilton Pool Reserve has water warm enough to swim in during the summer and is truly a sight to behold.

Big Bend’s Mountain Views

Rising high above the Chihuahuan Desert, the mountains of Big Bend National Park provide jaw-dropping views of the Earth during the daytime and the universe overhead during the pitch black nights. Apart from this, there isn’t much to see at Big Bend National Park except for stunning desert oases, hidden canyons, the largest diversity of species in the country, and record-holding dinosaur fossils.

San Marcos’ Scenic River

If you’re looking for something a bit more accessible than Big Bend, the San Marcos River in San Marcos is the place to see stunning natural beauty but still be within striking distance of everything Austin has to offer. The San Marcos River area is one of the oldest continually inhabited parts of the Americas. This is probably because of its crystal clear water perfect for all sorts of recreational activities such as swimming, canoeing, tubing, and fishing. Plus it’s just downright beautiful.
