Top attractions include the National Air & Space Museum, the Lincoln Memorial and National Museum of Natural History—all which receive more than 5 million visitors annually. But don’t think the city is only for book nerds. Sports fanatics can enjoy D.C.’s eight professional sports teams. Music and theater lovers can watch their favorites acts perform at more than 40 venues. Foodies will enjoy the more than 100 restaurants located in downtown D.C alone (hot spots include Union Market, Greek restaurant Kapnos, Astro’s Doughnuts & Fried Chicken and noted Spanish chef Jose Andre’s latest venture, Minibar).
City residents enjoy all four seasons and relatively mild climates year-round. When the weather’s nice, those who dwell in the region can frolic outside in 250,000 acres of parkland, stroll alongside the monuments or spend time at a park. Rock Creek Park runs alongside the river and is a great daytime destination and a great lunch break escape. Expect to see runners and walkers alike pounding the pavement during at all hours.
All of the aforementioned reasons probably contribute to why D.C. drew a record 17.9 million visitors in 2011. And that’s not all. The District also has plenty of space to accommodate traveling workers too. According to the city’s official tourism board, there are more than 4 million square feet of event/exhibit/meeting space in the region, with 2.2 million square feet of event space in the city of D.C. alone.
As headquarters of the federal government, plenty of federal employees and contractors regularly venture to the city on business. Marriott International employs more than 13,000 people, which means plenty of travel managers reside in the District when they’re working. And when these transient workers come to the city, they can rest assured knowing they’ll find quality temporary or corporate housing in D.C. via PC Housing.
